After they got home, they talked about what was happening to Alex. Alice’s mom said that it is very sad and we have to do our best to help her family. We are going there once a week.
“But they said that it wasn’t that bad.” Alice said.
“Yes honey, but you never know, it could get a lot worse.” her mother replied.
“Why are you always so negative? Why can’t you just be a little positive sometimes?” Alice yelled at her mother. She stormed up to her room and logged onto her laptop. She went onto Facebook and started to look for her cousin.
Alex is Sick and tired. Probably not going to school for a while.
Alice looked for online friends and the little box said that there were 5 people online. She clicked on it to see who was on. To her surprise Alex wasn’t on. Alex was always on at this time in the day. But Alice’s boyfriend, Luke, was on.
Luke: Hey sweetie
Alice: Hey Lukie!
Luke: What’s up with your status?
Alice: Well…umm…
Luke: You can tell me honey I won’t tell anybody
Alice: Ok
My cousin was diagnosed with diabetes and she is really sick. They said that it wasn’t that bad but I don’t believe them. She said she has type 1 which is usually classified to kids. I’m really worried about her.
Luke: aw I wish I was there to comfort you
Alice: I wish you were here too
Luke: ugghh my mom’s calling me g2g
Alice: Ok bye see you on Monday
Luke: bye! Love ya
Alice: love ya too!
Alice looked at what other friends were online. Nobody interesting was online so she logged off. Then someone knocked at her door.
“Honey, are you in there?” Alice’s mom said.
“Just leave me alone.” Alice said trying to make her voice sound mad.
“Alice, I know that you’re upset about the whole Alex thing…” Alice cut her mother off
“MOM YOU DON’T KNOW ANYTHING! JUST LEAVE ME ALONE!” Alice yelled so loud that the vase on her desk shook with her voice. The tears came again, this time stronger. She was upset and there was nothing anybody could do about it.

Living the Life chapter 2
“Alex was at school, just a normal day. She started feeling a little sick. She decided to go to the nurse. She walked down the hall, and then all of a sudden she collapsed. Lucky for her, her school makes them go to the nurse with another person. Her friend started calling for help. Three first grade teachers came running and picked Alex up. They called 9-1-1 and Alex was rushed to the hospital. They called me right away and I sped down the hospital. The doctor looked at her and did some tests and they found out that she had diabetes.” Uncle Tom said in a very solemn voice.
“Oh, Uncle Tom, that’s horrible! Alex I’m so sorry!” Alice stood up and ran around to her cousin. Alice gave Alex a big hug.
“It’s ok Alice. As long as I take the correct amount of insulin and don’t eat too much sugar during the day, I should be fine.”
“But what is diabetes exactly?” Alice asked very concerned about her cousin.
“Diabetes is a disease where the body doesn’t produce or properly use insulin.” Alice said.
“But what’s insulin?” Alice asked.
“Insulin is a hormone that is needed to convert sugar, starches, and other food into energy needed for daily life.” Alex said. “I have type 1 diabetes.”
“What’s the difference between all the types of diabetes?” Alice asked, quite confused at this point.
“Type 1 diabetes is usually diagnosed to children and young adults, another name for it is juvenile diabetes. In type 1 diabetes, the body doesn’t produce insulin.”
“Oh, well…is there a way to cure diabetes?” Alice said almost in tears.
“The only way that I could be “cured” is if I got a transplant. But I would have to take serious risks for that. I would have to take powerful drugs for the rest of my life. The drugs would suppress the immune system so my body won’t reject the new thing in me.”
“Is there a chance that you could ever die?” Alice asked in tears.
“Yes,” Alex said tears starting to run down her face “but the chance is small.”

Living the Life
"Hey Alice! Get your butt down here!" yelled Peter, Alice's 19 year old brother. He had big blue eyes and short blonde hair. They were going out to dinner, and like every girl, Alice couldn't get her hair just right.
"One second Peter! My ponytail isn't going up right!" Finally, after quite a while, Alice walked down the steps of their house. Her long brown hair swinging behind her in a high ponytail. Alice was 13 years old and had big brown eyes and long, straight, brown hair. Alice’s family was going out to dinner with their Uncle Tom. Alice got along really well with her cousins and couldn’t wait to see them. She ran outside and hopped in the car. Peter came along and got in the front seat. Alice’s mom and dad were divorced so Peter was the man of the house now. Since their mother was tired, Peter volunteered to drive.
“Thank you Peter, that’s very helpful of you.” Their mother Anne said. After for driving for about twenty minutes, they reached the restaurant where they were going to meet their cousins and their uncle. The minute Alice saw her cousins and her uncle coming, she ran over to them.
“Uncle Tom! You’re here!” Alice said, happy to once again see her uncle.
“What? You thought I wasn’t coming?” Her uncle laughed and embraced Alice. They walked to the entrance of the restaurant and waited to be seated. While they were waiting, they started to talk.
“Uncle Tom?” Alice asked.
“Yes Alice?”
“Where’s the rest of your family?” Alice said.
“Oh they’re coming. Don’t worry.” Just then the rest of the family started walking around the corner. Alice ran to greet them.
“Tomas, Maddie, John, and last but not least ALEX!!” Alice said. Alex was her cousin that she really got along well with. She was also thirteen. She was a little smaller than Alice, but had the same basic features. She had the same long straight brown hair and the big brown eyes.
“Alice! It’s so good to see you again!” Alex said.
“Yeah, you too. You look different; did you do something to your hair?” Alice asked.
“Ummm…not exactly. Daddy, should I say?” Alex asked her father in a hushed tone.
“Not yet honey; let’s get some dinner first.” Her father said.
“Okay. I’ll tell you later Alice.” Alex said as they were being showed to their table. After they sat down, Alice looked at Alex waiting for an answer.
“Now Daddy?” Alex asked.
“Sure honey.” Uncle Tom said. “Do you want me to tell them? Or do you think you can do it your self?”
“Umm…can you do it for me?”
“Of course honey.” Uncle Tom started the story.

Space Girl
I woke up and looked around in the darkness. It was cloudy on that night and there were no stars in sight. It was the night when all the planets were alligned. I found myself dreaming about a girl that I met. One look thats all it took to send me to another galaxy. I was just a teenage boy and I was dreaming about the most beautiful girl in school. Her blonde hair and blue eyes were the most beautiful.
At lunch I went outside and ate with my friends. I noticed her sitting all alone. I walked over to her and sat down next to her. I asked her what was wrong and she said that her sister was on her way to Mars and she ran into a star. Then she fell into my arms. Thank you gravity, never let her go. I'll hide her UFO, she'll never have to know. She's my space girl and she's out of this world. I looked down at her and her face was wet with tears. Then, I leaned down and kissed her cheak. She blushed, and I lifted her out of my arms. I walked away slowly.
The next I asked her out on a date. We were watching Star Wars and she looked kinda bored. She said she had seen it all before. Then she made me wonder even more. Which universe was hers, which galaxy did she call home?
After we got home as I was driving her home I asked her which planet was her favorite. She said the moon was overrated and that Jupiter's her favorite. She said that Pluto can't hang. I looked her in the eyes. Now, like a meteor I'm falling from the first time that I saw her, it was heaven on earth.
She's my space girl and she's out of this world!
